How many English words do you actually need?

Not twenty thousand. Research on lexical coverage puts the real number far lower, and explains why the order you learn words in beats the raw count.

To follow an informal English conversation you need between 2,000 and 3,000 word families. To read a novel without a dictionary, between 8,000 and 9,000. Both numbers come from the same line of research, lexical coverage. They also explain why you can spend years piling up vocabulary without ever feeling the jump. The problem isn't how many words you know. It's which ones. Paul Nation, the researcher who established those numbers, puts it bluntly: "not all words are created equal, and with a vocabulary of 1,000 to 2,000 of the most useful words we can hold adequate conversations and get most things done."

Ten words cover a quarter of any text

English loads almost all of the work onto a thin slice of its vocabulary. Nation's counts over general English corpora show that the ten most frequent words cover 25% of any text, and the first hundred cover roughly 50%. The word the, on its own, covers 7% of written English. The first thousand word families reach 80%.

Your first thousand words pay off more than the next nine thousand combined. That's the shape of the curve, and it isn't a motivational metaphor: the 2,000 most frequent word families cover 87.8% of a novel and close to 89% of unscripted conversation in the corpora Nation analyzed in 2006. After that, every additional thousand words buys you less.

Lexical coverage is the number that actually matters

Lexical coverage is the percentage of the running words in a text that you already recognize, and it decides whether you understand or struggle. The landmark experiment was run by Marcella Hu and Paul Nation in 2000: they swapped real words for invented ones, which let them control exactly how much vocabulary the reader didn't know, and measured comprehension at 80%, 90%, 95% and 100% coverage. At 80%, nobody understood the text adequately. At 95%, only a small minority did. Regression put the useful point at 98%: one unknown word in every fifty.

The gap between 95% and 98% looks tiny on paper and is enormous in practice. Nation translates it into numbers you can feel: "if the coverage figure were 95%, this would mean learners would be dealing with 1 unknown word in every two lines of text (1 unknown word in 20), or with 7 unknown words in every minute of speech at 150 words per minute." Seven stumbles a minute. That's why an English-language movie leaves you exhausted even when you "get most of it."

Listening costs you less vocabulary than reading

Your ear needs a smaller vocabulary than your eye does, and that's the best news in this literature. Hilde van Zeeland and Norbert Schmitt tested four informal narratives with 36 native and 40 non-native listeners, manipulated to 90, 95, 98 and 100% coverage. Their conclusion: "It seems that 95 per cent may be the best lexical coverage target for L2 listening comprehension of informal narratives." That drops the requirement from 6,000–7,000 word families to roughly 2,000–3,000.

Reading without support has two thresholds, not one. Batia Laufer and Geke Ravenhorst-Kalovski, working with a sample of 745 students, separated them cleanly: "We suggest two thresholds: an optimal one, which is the knowledge of 8,000 word families yielding the coverage of 98% (including proper nouns) and a minimal one, which is 4,000–5,000 word families resulting in the coverage of 95%." The minimum lets you read with help. The optimum lets you read alone. In their model, vocabulary accounts for 64% of the variance in reading comprehension.

There is no switch that flips

Comprehension doesn't jump at a magic point. It rises in a straight line with every point of coverage you gain. Norbert Schmitt, Xiangying Jiang and William Grabe measured 661 participants across eight countries in 1% bands and concluded: "There was no indication of a vocabulary 'threshold,' where comprehension increased dramatically at a particular percentage of vocabulary knowledge." Their figure is a comprehension gain of 2.3% for every extra 1% of vocabulary.

A straight line is the freeing part of that finding. You aren't waiting to cross anything. Every five hundred frequent words you lock in buy measurable comprehension this week, not two years from now.

Start with the words already waiting for you

The order you learn words in matters more than your pace. Nation reduces it to a rule: "When learning words, it is good to learn the high frequency words first. The effort of learning these words is well repaid by opportunities to meet and use these words." Half the distinct words in any text appear exactly once in it. Learn vocabulary at random and you pay full price for words you'll never meet again.

TV is the best place to measure yourself. An analysis of a 625-million-word corpus of movies and television found that viewers need the 3,000 and 5,000 word frequency levels to understand 95% and 98% of scripted dialogue, with soap operas as the most accessible entry point (2,000 for 95%). An earlier study of 88 television programs reported 95.45% coverage from 3,000 word families plus proper nouns and marginal words.

How many of those three thousand could you say out loud right now, without looking them up? Recognizing a word on the page and producing it in speech are two different inventories, and the second one is always smaller. The native speaker's 42,000 words were never your benchmark. An average 20-year-old speaker of American English knows about 42,000 lemmas, derived from 11,100 word families. That count is in lemmas, not in the word families the coverage studies measure. Your target is the three thousand that show up every day, and they're much closer than you think.
