Ship or Sheep: Why Your Ear Misses English Vowels
Spanish has five vowels; standard English has twenty. That is why ship and sheep collapse into one, and why the failure starts in your ear, not your mouth.

You say sheep and the other person hears ship. You repeat it slower, with more effort, and it still doesn't land. The problem isn't your mouth. It's your ear. Spanish has five vowels, and standard British English has twelve monophthongs and eight diphthongs. When 43 Spanish speakers listened to the vowel in beat, they identified it correctly only 58% of the time and their most frequent error was hearing it as the vowel in bit. More repetition doesn't fix that. Two separate kinds of training do: minimal pairs with immediate feedback for your ear, and speaking out loud for your mouth. Each one covers a different half of the problem.
Five vowels against twenty
Your ear isn't broken. It's tuned to a different language. Patricia Kuhl showed in 1991 that native vowel categories work like perceptual magnets: sounds close to a category's best example get pulled toward it and stop being distinguishable from each other. If your system has a single slot for the i region, the two English sounds that land there arrive at your brain already merged. This isn't laziness or a shortage of hours. It's the shape of the filter.
The size of your native vowel inventory predicts how hard this is. Paul Iverson and Bronwen Evans compared speakers of four languages and found that Spanish and French speakers identify English vowels less accurately than German and Norwegian speakers, whose systems carry many more vowels. That gap gets paid in hours: in a later experiment, Spanish speakers needed fifteen training sessions to reach what German speakers reached in five.

The gap doesn't mean you perceive in some exotic, separate way. The same authors stress the opposite: "The results suggest that there is a surprising degree of uniformity in the ways that individuals with different language backgrounds perceive second language vowels," write Iverson and Evans. You start further back and then travel the same road as everyone else.
Ship or sheep: the pair that gives you away
The contrast between sheep /iː/ and ship /ɪ/ is the best-documented failure point in English for Spanish speakers; Paola Escudero and Paul Boersma built an entire Studies in Second Language Acquisition paper on that single pair. The numbers explain why it hurts: in the Barcelona study, discrimination of /iː/ – /ɪ/ came in at 66% against 87% for an easier pair. You hear it two times out of three. A native hears it almost every time.
You tell your Bristol landlady I want to live here another year and she hears leave. The flat is listed the next morning. The two words differ by one vowel, and the vowel you produce lands right between them.
You're measuring the wrong property. A native decides by the shape of the sound, by tongue position and timbre, not by its length. Maria Kondaurova and Alexander Francis tested this with 29 Spanish-speaking listeners and put it bluntly: "while native English listeners rely primarily on spectrum, inexperienced Spanish listeners tend to rely exclusively on duration". That bet on length shows up in speech too: learners stretch /iː/ only 11% longer than /ɪ/, where natives stretch it 50%.

Spanish doesn't use duration to tell words apart either. Eva Cerviño-Povedano and Joan C. Mora, who studied 84 learners, trace it to a fallback mechanism: when the difference in timbre isn't perceptible, the listener grabs duration even though it distinguishes nothing in their native language. You aren't importing a Spanish habit. You're improvising with the only difference you can still hear. That's why sheep pronounced as "a Spanish i, but longer" still sounds like ship: length is decoration, shape is the message.
Bad isn't bed, but bad leaks into bed
The vowel in bed is already yours. The one in bad isn't. Spanish speakers identify /ɛ/, the vowel in bed, correctly 90% of the time: it's the easiest English vowel there is, because it sits almost exactly on top of the Spanish e. The vowel in bad is a different story. /æ/ doesn't exist in Spanish, and in the production measurements reported in that same study, accuracy drops to 70–73%. This isn't a symmetrical merger. It's a one-way leak, from bad toward bed.
The mistake survives ten years because nothing ever punishes it. A Colombian developer says the release was bad in standup, it comes out as bed, and nobody corrects him: the rest of the sentence carries the meaning. A mistake that context keeps rescuing never gets feedback, and without feedback it doesn't fix itself.
The repair is physical and it feels exaggerated: for /æ/ you open your jaw wider than instinct wants and push the sound into a zone between the Spanish a and e, not on top of either. If your mouth does the same thing on bad as on bed, you aren't making two vowels. You're making one.
Bird, shirt, burn: the vowel nobody taught you
The hardest English vowel for a Spanish speaker isn't the one in sheep. It's the one in bird. In the Barcelona study, /ɜː/ was identified correctly only 47% of the time, worse than any other vowel measured, and the most common error was hearing it as the vowel in car or the one in cup. More than half the time your ear files this vowel under a category that belongs to a different word.
At a Manchester pharmacy you ask for something for a burn and the pharmacist hears barn. He stares at you, because you have just asked for ointment for an agricultural building. The difference between burn and barn isn't the r and isn't the length: it's where your tongue sits, dead center in your mouth rather than back.
/ɜː/ is a central, neutral vowel with lips neither spread nor rounded, the laziest position your mouth can take. The accent you aim at matters here, because Escudero and Boersma showed that acquisition of these contrasts is dialect-specific: in American English this vowel carries an r inside it, in British English it doesn't. Pick one and train on material in that accent instead of mixing them.
How this actually gets trained
Ear training on minimal pairs works, and the effect size is measured. A 2025 meta-analysis of 79 studies in Studies in Second Language Acquisition puts the improvement in sound identification at g = 0.92, a medium-to-large gain, and at g = 0.67 against control groups. The exercise is what the British Council calls a minimal pair: two words that differ in exactly one sound, heard blind, with the right answer revealed immediately after each attempt.
The detail almost everyone overstates is the number of voices. Intuition says "the more different speakers, the better," and the meta-analysis says otherwise: there is no significant difference between training with 2 talkers and training with 30, and the estimated optimum sits around six. What does matter is dosage: gains flatten out around 400 total minutes, and the typical program in the literature runs 8.9 sessions and 294 minutes. Half a dozen speakers and about seven hours spread over weeks. That's the whole budget.

Train your ear to ignore duration, not just to notice timbre. That's the practical finding from Kondaurova and Francis: training that explicitly taught listeners to disregard vowel length beat training that amplified the quality difference. Translated into your week: when you miss a pair, don't ask yourself which one sounded longer. Ask which one had the tongue further forward.
A trained ear doesn't drag your mouth along by itself. A meta-analysis of 25 years of studies found that the perception gain runs to d = 0.92 while the gain that carries over into production stops at d = 0.54, and vowels transfer worse than consonants. The most direct experiment confirms it: "learners in the Perception Training condition improved in vowel identification but not vowel production, while those in the Production Training condition showed only small improvements in performance on perceptual tasks", write Wafaa Alshangiti and Bronwen Evans. Ear and mouth train separately, and each one needs its own reps.

Say sheep – ship – sheep in a row and watch what moves. If the only thing that changes between the two words is how long they last, you're still using the cue natives ignore. In sheep the corners of your lips spread and your tongue rises and moves forward; in ship everything relaxes toward the center of your mouth. You've passed when you can say both with identical duration and they still sound different.
